We are an open and friendly forum. What evil, Machiavellian schemes would require the use of PMs?

@Rych - did I mention I'd taken Ranger 2 as a vet pick?

Well I don't like to powergame or metagame in public. But...
If I take 3 points of Contribute, I have an obvious 'in' to ritual groups around the assorted factions, and they often seem to be most directly involved in plot. But this would mean I had to take a magic skill, such as Shaman 1. (running total 9) Since I definitely want Literacy and Numeracy, and Ranger1 would be useful, the points are starting to stack up (running total 16). Light armour and one-handed weapon would use up all 20 of my starting points.
Am I spreading myself too thin stat-wise, or do I have just enough Magic and Lore/General skills to be useful with a token amount of Combat to stop me having to spend the entire event in hiding? I can always pick up Ranger2 as a veteran skill, possibly as half of Tricks of the Trade.

and what would you spend the other 3 trick points on.
Saddly there are a few combinations of of skills that are seriously more effective in cp than the others (in part its a by product of a system that can be played by hundreds of people symaltaniously with limited reffing). most lore skills are almost never used. I mean not ever. Ranger sounds like a must for those that want to be ranger like but in truth it equals foraging. contribute 3 is useful IF you are part of a ritual team. rituals require practice to be good or a very tight knit circle of friends that can play off each other at short notice. the smaller the points of contribute per person the larger the group. the larger the group the more practice you need. sword and light armour = you get killed alot for the cost of 4 character points. Shaman 1 is a nice complement to a character build but on its own its not going to give you much to work with. I'm not trying to wee on your chips but i'd definately cut at least one of your aspects back and boost something else. loose ranger and a point of contribute and take some form of magic lvl2 loose ranger take 4 extra contribute (that'll make you worth talking to) loose shaman and the contribute - get maps, a bow and upgrade to medium (then rob a bank to get money for arrows). loose ranger, 1-h and armour and then get magic 2 and shield. plenty of options but if you basically second class at everything then you won't fit into any niche. |

Formerly Garratt, 3rd spearman from the left. Now back in the Eored/Algaia
OOC- Steptoe/John/Toffee none of my views necessarily represent those of CP or its staff etc. etc. |

Never under-estimate body dev. I regret so much not taking it now!
That, and level 2 magic. Ranger skills are very, very rarely used, apart from forage (and sometimes a few frothy bits). My two pennies. Coming from a starting character of: Ranger 1 +2 Corp 1 1 Hand, Ambi, Light Armour. Niche stuff is tricky! |

funnily enough a similar conversation has just gone on in wolf boards.
a couple of points that struck true to me - specialise now because you can't later (signy) :
if you're going to do magic: level 2 and body dev: then get everything else later.
if you're doing rituals: level 1 and 7-10points is best. (with respect you said you were not a fighter - use that time for practice)
if you're doing armour, get heavy. i know its metagamy, but a vet pick of xhvy makes you much more useful

No, that's absolutely fine. I had been thinking I was spread too thinly.
No combat skills at all tends to mean spending the entire event hiding... sword and light armour means try to defend yourself while looking for a proper fighter to take it down. but I suppose using the points elsewhere means I'm worth healing when I get dropped in every single camp attack!
Is there a point where extra contribute stops being useful? It would be possible to start with eleven or even fourteen, but that's a lot of pressure on that contributer to not accidentally blow up the world. Level2 magic, literacy, numeracy and Contribute6? Dependant on how good you are with a sword, I find that light armour gives you ~ 3 seconds more life! Admittedly I am rubbish with a sword. Perhaps having a chat with Small about ritual shizzle might be of benefit? |
